I Never Promised You a Rose Garden is the story of a self-conscious recollection of an obsession with the actor River Phoenix that morphs into a history of white nationalism in the Pacific Northwest. An intriguing narrative arc that is matched by its form: painted with a washed out dark blue ink on the cheap paper designed for elementary school assignments that was ubiquitous in the USA for many years, but is now fading – or perhaps has already faded – out of use (you'll recognize it when you see it). Originally self-published as a series of zines, it now has a more permanent and lasting form in this durable, 232 page, hardcover edition from Fantagraphics.
