I Never Promised You a Rose Garden is the story of a self-conscious recollection of an obsession with the actor River Phoenix that morphs into a history of white nationalism in the Pacific Northwest. An intriguing narrative arc that is matched by its form: painted with a washed out dark blue ink on the cheap paper designed for elementary school assignments that was ubiquitous in the USA for many years, but has since faded out of use (if you're old enough, you'll recognize it when you see it). Originally self-published as a series of zines, it now has a more permanent and lasting form in this durable, 232 page, hardcover edition from Fantagraphics (and currently on special).
