Rafael Zaiats is a Moldovan creator living in Tbilisi, Georgia (the former Soviet republic, not the southern American state, in case anyone was wondering). Makinophobe (as in, phobia of machines) is a 164 page, full color graphic novel that imaginatively – and imagistically – conveys the impact of his having been struck by a car at the age of 12. Showing how the trauma of that event gradually evolved into a fear and hatred of cars, and eventually machines in general. The unfolding narrative is presented in its entirety through pantomime (textless) art, thus it is the images that tell the story, and show the fear.
