Break out the champagne, it's the first volume of an all-new Taiyo Matsumoto series! Tokyo These Days will be collected in three volumes. Its format is pretty much identical to that of Matsumoto's classic, Sunny: sturdy 200+ page hardcovers, printed in black and white with some color on a nice, slightly rough, offwhite/cream paper, which perfectly complements this heartfelt, personal reflection on the world of manga-making that, while of course being redolent with the particulars of manga, as well as Japan as a whole and, specificallly, the neighborhoods, architecture, apartments, stores, streets, walkways and public transportations of Tokyo, will resonate to anyone who as ever been deeply immersed in the making of comics anywhere. The obsessions, the challenges, the emotional ups and downs, the loneliness – and then the camaraderie! – they're all here and beautifully handled.
It's original serialization only concluded in June of 2023, so this is lightning fast, relatively speaking, for an English language translation (which is by long-time Matsumoto collaborator, Michael Arias, in case you were wondering).
Tokyo These Days is shaping up to me yet another Taiyo Matsumoto masterpiece.
