Surviving on Mars iprovides a 116 page selection from "several years" worth of Brandon Graham's recent "diary comix." The book is printed on a heavier, rough, off white stock, with plenty of gentle pastel colors, for a nice look and feel (a bit like Walrus). It is, for the most part, in full color with some pages, here and there, in black & white – usually for sharing those pages that are more or less pure sketchbook. It even veers off on occasion into an impromtu comicstrip, as in the case of "Mr. Quits" and "Tommy".
The diaristic aspect that make up the bulk of the work cover the gamut of life experiences, from the internal – observations, recollections, emotional states, intellectual speculations, plans, etc. – to the external – life experiences, relationships, living quarters, living arrangements, travels, and more.
The artwork ranges from the stylized cartooning that we associate with Graham's comics to loose impromptu sketching to more detailed landscape drawing – and all stops inbetween. Drawings are made from life, from memory and from imagination.
And while, yes, there is a degree of the to-be-expected focus on sexuality and sexiness, the work strives (but does not always entirely succeed) to retain a level of self-aware detatchment, and there is certainly much more besides.
