¡WAREHOUSE FIND! Much to our amazement, we have uncovered a hidden cache of the third (and final) issue of David Mazzucchelli's seminal self-published series, Rubber Blanket. Published over twenty years ago, this oversize (9" x 12") comic book contains 72 pages of duo-tone and black and white comics. Edited and published by Mazzucchelli and his wife, the painter and colorist-extraordinaire, Richmond Lewis, this series marked the profound shift in Mazzucchelli's sensibilities and artistic practice after he walked away from his "major league" career with Marvel and DC to follow his own inner artistic voice. This issue features short pieces by Ted Stearn, David Hornung, and the team of Semerando & Ghermandi, but the bulk of it is by Mazzuchelli, whose 40-page "Big Man" story is the centerpiece of the issue. "Big Man" combines attributes of The Hulk and Frankenstein's monster with aspects of Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men and pulls it all together with consummate comics story-telling to make for a (quite inflluential) cult comics classic that was in a league of its own when it first appeared in 1993. Mazz also contributed two "Mope & Grope" one-pagers along with a farcical, Kurtzmanesque send-up of Jean Paul Sartre, "The Death of Monsieur Absurde." The cache we uncovered was not all that large, so, knowing that we have priced this far enough below the prevailing market price to attract speculators and profiteers, we are limiting the quantity on this to ONE PER CUSTOMER*, in the interest of allowing as many as possible to get their hands on this classic. ¡SOLD OUT! Whew, that was quite a response. Even with the limiting of one per customer, those flew out the door. Good to know that fine work is still in demand. Our condolences to all that missed out on this. Who knows, maybe we'll locate another stash; if so, we'll let you know....
