MBDL is a hodgepodge mish-mash memoir that incorporates many flights of fancy up to and including a full (water)color pirate adventure set amidst the otherwise black & white, pen & ink contents. The non-normative elements of the memoir (seem to) represent the mind's tricks in attempting to repress, elide and sublimate traumas of various sorts (including sexual), some of which led to drug abuse (partucularly of hallucinogens), which can then, in turn, be seen as connecting to the hallucinatory aspects of the work. Interesting, mysterious and engaging, if at times frustratingly opaque, MBDL is a unique work that is, of course, expertly and satisfyingly drawn by Gipi, in the artistic sense; the "Badly Drawn" of the title being better seen as a figurative expression framing life as a game in which he drew some bad cards.
