This is a really nice oversize hardcover reissue of Munoz and Sampayo's 1991 masterwork. Solid black and white printing on flat white paper. Translated by Kim Thompson, Kay MacRae and Robert Boyd. This edition comes with plenty of bonus material that was not included with the earlier softcover Fantagraphics edition from roughly twenty years ago, namely: An introductory essay by Francis Marmande that includes plenty of classic photographs of Billie Holiday, and a sizable bonus gallery of outtakes, sketches and pin-ups by José Muñoz. This is one of the best jazz inflected graphic novels out there. Recommended!
Back in print at last! And Eclipse/IDW did it right in this fantastic 392-page collection of thse Munoz & Sampayo classics – the first of two! This full-size edition is crisply printed on heavy newsprint and quite reasonably priced. These works were quite influential at the time of their initial release thirty-some years ago, and once you start digging into this volume it's easy to see why.
