Released practically in tandem with Sacco's Journalism, reviewed way back in our June listings, we somehow failed to get around to mentioning it here until now, for which we apologize.  Days of Destruction Days of Revolt  takes a novel hybrid approach to long form reporting, combining Hedges's five lengthy essays describing the lives and living conditions in Pine Ridge, South Dakota, Camden, New Jersey, Welch, Wes Virginia, Immokalee, Florida and Liberty Square, New York City with Sacco's vividly detailed illustration – most are large, full page and double page splash in size – and straight-up comics pieces, which are six to fourteen pages in length and are the real deal.  Hedges and Sacco "set out to take a look at the sacrifice zone, those areas that have been offered up for exploitation in the name of profit, progress, and technological advancement.  They wanted to show in words and drawings what life looks like in places where human beings and the natural world are used and then discarded to maximize earnings."

This is a used copy.  The dustjacket is considerably worn, and there is notable shelf wear to the edges of the hardcover – but the interior pages are very neat and clean and so this copy makes for an undimished reading experience.  And:  DEAL!

In the spring of 2025 Joe Sacco and Chris Hedges – who previously teamed up a decade ago on Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt –  traveled to Cairo, Egypt and interviewed 29 Palestinian families who had recently left Gaza.  Requiem for Gaza is the result.  This 142 page hardcover transcribes these interviews into a synthesis of reportage and portrait that is roughly 1/3 comics and illustrations by Sacco and 2/3 text by Hedges (which has been heavily annotated and footnoted for verification and source mapping).  Taken together, Requiem for Gaza provides a detailed – and visceral – up close and personal record of the horrific costs that have been borne by Palestinian civilians of Gaza as a result of the overwhelming, savage, and continual Israeli reprisal attacks in the wake of the brutal fall 2023 Hamas attack on Israel.
