This issue of Love and Rockets contains both a mourning for loss and a celebration of life. It is the first issue published since the passing of Gilbert and Jaime's mother, Aurora Hernandez (this issue's cover artist, in case you were wondering). It presents a special essence of that duality that underpins the series, and is, fittingly, divided neatly into two halves, about, more or less specifically, love and rockets. The lead story, by Gilbert, "Love Is Everything," can be read as a moving eulogy to their mother, while in the second half, Jaime presents (a quite violent, by his standards) conclusion to his long-running science fiction epic featuring Animus.
Now would be a good time to take a moment to read this excellent interview with Mario, Gilbert and Jaime conducted by Jeet Heer, which provides a wonderful window onto the world of their childhood and their mother's engagement with and encouragement of comics reading.
Price-Transition-Special: The retail price of Love and Rockets has jumped over the last year from $4.99 to $6.99 – so we're meeting you in the middle through 2025.
