This box set presents 118 candidates for the first Rock 'n' Roll record ever recorded.
Rock â??nâ?? Roll: â??A form of popular music arising from and incorporating a variety of musical styles, especially rhythm and blues, country music and gospel. Originating in the United States in the 1950s, it is characterised by electronically amplified instrumentation, a heavily accented beat, and relatively simple phrase structure.â? Thus is the term Rock â??nâ?? Roll described in one dictionary.
Other definitions add, â??known for its strong beat and urgent lyricsâ? and â??usually featuring vocals (often with vocal harmony), electric guitars and a strong back beat; other instruments, such as the saxophone, are common in some styles.â? Rock â??nâ?? Roll was all of that and drew upon its influences from blues, boogie woogie, jazz, R&B, Appalachian folk
music, bluegrass and hillbilly or country music. It was also music aimed at a teenage audience both musically and lyrically and as a musical genre has exerted unparalleled influence around the world. The term Rock â??nâ?? Roll went on to be used for subsequent music that evolved from the original â??50s Rock â??nâ?? Roll in the following decades, much to the annoyance of diehard fans. However this later musical manifestation should more accurately be termed â??rock musicâ?. Rock â??nâ?? Roll, as any true Bill Haley or Little Richard will tell you, was specifically the music of the 'early baby boomer generation' and was the music of the â??50s.
