We've had this one in the shop for awhile, and thought we shold bring it to the attention of our online customers. Night Train is a unique collection of short – for the most part, very short – stories by the Dutch author, A.L. Snijders, all translated by Lydia Davis, who also provides a fascinating introduction on her process.
These quasicrystalline stories offer ineffable satisfactions. The description provided by publisher, New Directions puts well in saying, "Selected from many hundreds in the original Dutch, the stories gathered here—humorous, or bizarre, or comfortingly homely—are something like day-book entries, novels-in-brief, philosophical meditations, or events recreated from life, but—inhabiting the borderland between fiction and reality—might best be described as autobiographical mini-fables."
