This sturdy, smyth-sewn, horizontally formatted, 336 page, full color hardcover volume ably edited by Jenny Gaschke features over 500 images scanned from sketchbooks in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum's extensive collection. Included are roughs, sketches, work-ups, and full on finished works in a host of mediums inclulding pencil, charcoal, pastel, watercolor, pen & ink, and more. A period of roughly 500 years is covered – 1500 - 2000. Many famous artists on are included here, like Leonardo da Vinci, Angelica Kauffman, John Constable, John WIlliam Waterhouse, Edward Burne Jones, George Cruikshank, Beatrix Potter, E. H. Shepard, Paul Nash, Shahed Saleem, and Julie Verhoeven, but there are also a larger number of lesser known – but clearly tremendously talented artists, som of whose work is knock-your-socks off good (including one sketchbook by an unknown, anonymous artist). Absorbing these artworks and their respective processes is as enjoyable as it is instructional. Also worthy of note: there is a strong sampling of women artists from all periods.
We've posted a gallery of a handful of pages from the book on the Copacetic Tumblr, HERE.
