An all new, 160 page, full color hardcover graphic novel from Noah Van Sciver for under $20. What more do you need to know?
Well, for those who want to know more, we can say that Noah Van Sciver's latest is a subtly layered work that is his most complex and satisfying (fictional) graphic novel yet. At its core is, literally, the mess left by the father/grandfather of the mother/son dyad that serve as the work's dual central protagonists and whose job is to clear it out – while looking for something(s) that will make it worth their while to do so. But that is more or less just the prompt; there is much more.
At times it feels as though Noah had (has) been collecting a bunch of remembrances, ideas, things, behaviors, events, tropes, odds and ends and cultural oddities that he wanted to put in a book and then managed to assemble them together into a coherent and cogent narrative (which could perhaps be the autobiographical layer of "the mess"). We don't want to give too much away here, as watching the story unwind and experiencing the series of surprises as all the pieces come together is a large part of where, in this particular instance, the proverbial pleasure of the text resides. The Mess makes for a great read.
