Pill Hill is a graphic memoir detailing the chaotic years of raising a child amidst a dissolving marriage, years that see one problem leading to another and eventually spiralling into drug abuse and psychosis . Roughly four years in the making, the process of its creation may very well have provided Breutzman with the path out of the nightmare. It's a 256 page hardcover printed largely in light blue duotone, with intermittent half-toned black and white and the occasional splash of spot color. Despite the onerous circumstances of its creation, the work is tightly focused and expertly rendered.
Publishers Weekly has provided both a short review, HERE, as well as a hefty preview, HERE.
Josh Bayer says, "Pill Hill is a formalist tour de force and a triumph of the author's humanity over a universe teeming with incomprehensible horror."
Matt Madden, in turn, states, "Nic Breutzman marshals the mind-bending power of comics to share an often hilaeious, occasionally harrowing, and deeply moving account of parenting against all odds."
